Fuel tank for 87 4runner with 20R

About a year ago I picked up an 87 4runner that originally came with a 22RE but now has a 20R swapped in. I purchased it for the interior, however before I start pulling that out I decided to see what it'd take to get it running. The engine will crank and seems to run fine. The biggest issue is that it doesn't have a fuel tank. I've done some suspension replacements and basic maintenance, but never touched a fuel system. I have a neighbor who's pretty handy, he's helping me out but we're not sure exactly what we need since the 20R didn't originally come in a 4runner.

The issue we're running into is that the original 22RE had the fuel pump in the tank, but the 20R has it on the engine. If we buy a replacement tank for the 22RE, what's the best way to bypass the in tank pump? I've also looked at tanks for a 84 4runner with a 22R since those have do not have an in tank pump, would that swap into my 87? What part do we need to go into the tank to pickup the fuel? I've looked through several parts catalogs and can't find any info on that.

I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

a few things. the 20r isnt special, its just a 22r with a weird exhaust manifold and a dual row timing chain as compared to a 22r. the 4runner was offered with either 22r, 22re, 22ret, or 3vze so its not a huge issue to have the 20r. further more, i dont think the fuel tank changed between the 22re and 22r. so all you should be worried about it the right fuel pump with gasket and spacer, a charcoal canister (maybe) and the send/return lines form the tank.

Very good to know, thanks! My concern was the top of the tank would be different between a 22R tank and a 22RE. The part that concerns me is since there's a fuel pump on the motor, I don't really need a pump at the tank. My uneducated view of this is I just need a fuel pickup/return tube rather than a "pump". But, looking over various aftermarket parts diagrams, all I see is pumps so that's where the confusion is coming from. The filler neck and send/return lines on the frame are all there. I need the tank and whatever will be required to connect the lines on the frame into it - I just can't figure out what that is.

Keep in mind the tank is just a tank it won’t come with anything to fill the holes on top. So that’s where you’ll need to differentiate to carb specific parts I believe. Still, not a big deal.
