front drive shaft replacement

Hi, is there a known replacement for the front driveshaft on a 1986 pickup to get rid of the double joint type ?
i came across a 2004 4runner one and seems to be of the same lenght and same bolt patern but without the double joint.

any ideas ?

thanks.

You should research single cardigan and double joints. See what requirements are for proper operating angles and mounting angles.

^^^ what he said. Also a double cardan joint is also a constant velocity joint (CV).

4crawler has most of the info plus the engineering if you can understand it.

Oh, you want technical... So, if your front pinion is pointed directly at the transfer case output shaft but that shaft is not pointed at the front pinion you need a constant velocity joint or "double cardan" joint. or you will eat u-joints and/or cause vibrations. If your front pinion and transfer case shafts are parallel you can use single u-joints. Double cardan joints also tend to last longer under high angle operation. So, it's your call and you can run either one and you may have no issues with it. Toyota put a double cardan there for a reason and that reason is all about angles, like muddpigg said.

I was going to say that but unless you are an engineer it's just speculation.

I'm only an associate mechanical engineer for a national lab, so I'm still not authorized to post with engineering authority to a non engineer lol.

I am a Mechanical Engineering student, does that count??

My question is why do you want to replace the front driveshaft in the first place?

Is your current driveshaft bad?

Are factory replacements failing on you in a short amount of time?
