anyways. i think this guy must work for fram because the numbers seem a lil high. he just wants us all to go out and buy fram air filters.

i heard that the filters that you have to oil after a while the oil gets into the mass air sensor and can ruinen it. thats $200 to replace so u end up spending $204.49 and that sucks (thats just what i heard and i don't know how true it is)

I went from 18 to 20mpg just by changing out my filthy air filter with a normal el-cheapo from autozone.

go watch mythbusters. they tested with AC vs. Windows down. the truck with the windows down ran way longer than the truck with the AC on. same amount of starting gas in the same make and model or SUV on the same test track.
I love mythbusters. That said, their test methods left a little to be desired on that myth. They couldn't run at true highway speeds due to a short track that was too dangerous, so the air resistance was not real-world. Their method for determining an "empty tank" was anything but scientific. They should have monitored the fuel consumption using the same method they used in the big rig drafting episode - a computer. Granted, there was a difference of 30 laps, but I'm not convinced it makes THAT big a difference...

Not quite...I work in an enterprise data center for an insurance company.

But come on...serously. $15.00 shipped with a $20 rebate....so $5 in my pocket. Its the cheapest upgrade I've done so far no matter what the mpg gain....

True, that can happen if you OVER OIL the filter. Follow the instructions carefully. I think-I don't have one at hand-K&N instructs you to let the filter sit outside for an hour or two after oiling before reinstalling it. Just coat the element, it doesn't have to drenched in oil. I've had good luck hitting it with the leaf blower just to make sure excess oil wasn't running off the filter before installation.

But yeah, neither the Air Hog or K&N probably filters as good as a more restrictive factory filter.

K & N and other filters are a total placebo as far as people suggesting you can gain any real, meaningful performance from them. Even trueflow on their website has dyno charts showing a stock filter versus their filter and there is virtually no performance difference, and then they mention to the effect of that changing your air filter will not gain you performance, its designed to filter.

I'll tell you what - hook up a 2000 pound trailer to a 3.0 equipped truck and tow it up a 5% grade. Run it once with a K & N and then run it with a stock filter. You won't notice a difference. That's called no meaningful performance increase. The only way to increase performance from your intake is to make some mechanical changes to the air filtration system itself i.e. a K & N FIPK system but even that, $250 later, only nets you 3 HP at 4400 RPM's which is the equivilent of about 1 or 2 HP at your more useable RPM's. IF a complete K & N FIPK system nets you 3 HP over a stock intake system with stock filter, that should tell you how "restrictive" a stock filter is. Don't forget, it's called a "filter" for a reason. If I wanted oiled gauze for my filter I'd open up my first aid kit and coat it in Mobil 1.

windows down is more efficiant to a point. I think its roughly 60 mph then the drag is too much.

when I go over that speed I usually close my windows halfway ( ac no worky)

Just put your A/C on and shut up. If you're nickel and diming yourself about whether or not A/C will use more gas over windows down, then sell your truck for an echo.

I don't care to quibble on the AC vs. Windows debate. But, this deal is back. I just ordered 2 filters from Rock Auto on the cheap, and I pilfered the rebate from Amazon:

AM I the only one questioning this statement, a 500 rpm drop at 65 with a new air filter, I didn't realize air filters could also change gearing? Perhaps his Torque converter was not locking up before and the new filter allowed just enough extra air and maybe that 1 or 2 ponies so now his truck holds O/D, locked T/C, thus gaining him some mpgs. Just a thought as I can't see any other way the 500 rpm drop is possible.
