I posted a little while back about hard shifting and tranny problems. Well I just changed a clutch on a 2000 higlander edition 4runner. I noticed that the stock disc was in the opposite way I had just installed mine. From reading the service manual it sounded as if the side with the springs sticking the farthest out from the disc went towards the tranny. Maybe I misunderstood but actually that is flat with the spline sticking out the farthest goes toward the tranny. The springs should sit in the flywheel. I know I read some threads when people were confused about the correct way because the disc I've seen don't say which way to put them . The one that I pulled was the original and it was label. Hope this helps.

Now I don't get grinding when going into reverse, it shifts much smoother, and there's less slipping.

hopefully you checked the disc for damage, having installed it backwards?

 

I feel your pain; I've found SO MANY things that have been installed backward from the factory or a "qualified" service technician....I'm constantly amazed by it.

 

I just installed the disc before christmas so it was fairly new. It wasn't cracked just a little worn from slippage on one side so I cleaned it, the flywheel and the cover up real good and slapped it back in there. I have noticed much less slippage and my pickup is better.I can't belive I installed it backwards.
