Hey guy, first time poster and I have what I think is a easy question. Winter is here and I’m having some starter troubles in my rusted out ‘87 22re 4x4 auto truck. The starter engages and starts the motor a-ok, but it’s failing to retract and is bogging the engine down when temperatures drop below -0. I took the starter out last week and cleaned up it inside thinking it was just some old schmoo that was keeping the plunger from retracting. Problems still persist. Before I pop for a new starter (oem with 215k is in er) is there a starter relay in the autos? I’d so where is it? 88 Dealer manual list only a relay for MT. Anything else in the starter system that I should check before putting in a reman starter? Affected by very low temps, anything over 10-15 degrees and it starts up great.
