Fender Flare Hole Fix

Howdy,
So I have a 92 Pickup that I bought off a guy, and I'm currently trying to clean it up a little bit. A couple of the fender flares are cracked and instead of spending hundreds of dollars on the bushwhackers (which I don't really even like the look of), I was wondering if there was a common way that people used to cover the holes left from the last guy. I should add that I plan on painting this truck soon. Also, are there any other cheap fender flares that don't stick out to far and look natural on the truck.
Thanks in advance.

patch the holes like you would any other metal hole, either weld them up with low heat or slap some bondo in there

My fenders were rusting out around the trim strips. I decided to repair then the easy/cheap way first to see what the results might be, realizing that I might have to do it over in a few years. I pulled off the trim strips, took a very stiff spiral wire brush on an angle grinder to remove all of the rusted material, screwed in some sheet metal backing plates to bridge the larger holes, applied bondo, sanded and repainted. That was three years ago and so far it's holding up well and looks good. I would think a similar technique would work for your situation.
