fan ripped right off 3.0!!!!

Hey guys i was driving yesterday and i start hearing a grinding noise from under the hood. All of the sudden i hear this terrible noise and then all the acessory light s light up and no power steering. Right away i thought i blew a belt. So i pull over and look down and the whole fan and where it bolts to tore off!!! WTF!!! then i notice a huge hole in my radiator. What happened?

happens with those 3.0 fans. they become brittle and start to crack eventually flying apart taking out hoses, radiators, your hood, whatever gets in the way

Wow thats scary!! I'd take this opportunity to upgrade to a Flexalite 165 electric fan. Don't waste your time with another clutch driven one.

Just curious, over time can this happen to a 3rd gen 3.4L engine?

took another look at it and it looks like a bearing went bad on the place where the fan bolts to. I think it is the fan pulley bracket. Anyway i just ordered a flex-a-lite 165 fan and i am going to put it in tommorow. Well i also had to buy a new radiator, 186.00 new electric fan, 253.00 to get it overnighted, and new belts for the a/c and alternator, don't know how much they will be. And a bunch of agrivation. All because of some bearing on a cheesey metal bracket(that by the way i called toyota and they want 798.00 for) I hope that the electric fan will keep things cool, i have a auto tranny and a/c.

Similar thing happend to me. My fan pully bracket bearings went bad luckily I caught it before it went to pieces. The flex-a-lite will keep you plenty cool. The stealership was asking about that same price when I talked to them, its because they dont really make that piece anymore. You can find alot of them cheap on Ebay.

X2, not sure what year you have but here's one for 88-92 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/88-92...QQcmdZViewItem

You will probably still need one even with the e-fan, unless you get some different drive belts and bypass those idler pulleys.

Thats true you need that bracket to stay. I bypassed mine by cutting down the old bracket and running custom belts. A little more work to do, but save you some cash which is always nice. Also the bracket serves no purpose since all it does is hold a pully.

How did you catch it before it came apart, by sound or inspection or both?

long story. I got stuck in a huge mud pit. My truck was acting weird and i was at work one day about to leave for home when I heard a crunching kind of noise. I looked under the hood and my fan was spinning kinda side to side. It would correct itself for a few moments then act up again. I took it all apart and found bad bearings in the idler pully. My guess is i got some good dirt mixed into the bearings that eventualy wore the bearing out. If you do any offroading i would suggest getting a electric fan to protect against this and also keep you cooler.
