Fan always kicks in when starting. Any way to stop it?

I noticed that regardless of temp, my trucks rad fan always kicks in when I start it, and it runs for about 20 seconds.

Now, if the rads hot, I get that. but in minus 40 the last thing the rad needs is a blast of cold air against it.

Anyone else notice this? Anyoneknow how to fix it so it only kicks in at temp? Hopefully with out adding a manual switch?

Everything else on the truck works properly I should point out, no thermostat issues, no over heating, all is norm.

Thoughts?

If it's a clutch fan, then no.

Im assumingit is, and thats why it kicks in every startup. If it were electric, you would think it was solely controlled by temp no?

Ok, so could it be the clutch? I mean, it turns off every time also, and kicks in when temps rise. Is it like this on every toy?

I know older big rigs are like this, but it seems so inefficent

Mine does it, no matter the temp. All three of the my 22res I have owned over the past 5 years have done it, regardless of the temp. Just a fan-clutch thing.

Yes. They've been around for years, even my '06 has one. If you are THAT worried about it you could put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to block off some of that cold air.

Yeah, the thought was to go to an electric fan.

I know my question seems very newbish in nature, but Ive always driven imports with 'newer technology' if you will lol.

I have a piece of cardboard in front of my radiator!! But not for this reason. -40f + 55mph does not help in the warm cabin air department. Cardboard in front of the radiator does help some though, especially on long trips

when its -40, its going to be pulling cold air regardless of cardboard when first starting. so really, it won't help.

Yeah for long highway drives in weather under -25c, I usually put cardboard in front of the rad. That s a birth right in northern Alberta, and most likely in Alaska too I guess! lol.

I think I found a good kit, will post any updates if I go this way.

haha. yes. So many vehicles have cardboard in front of their radiator. I need to put a new, bigger piece in if it gets colder. We have only had -40F/C here once this winter so far, so its not too bad

You know, oddly enough, we had what I think may be our only bad cold snap already, happened in December. 4 days of -55c. Normally its this time of year that gets that way, for a good week or two, but lately its been 5-10 degrees under freezing.

Gotta love 'global warming', or 'economic recession' or 'el nino' or whatever the hell you want to blame it on.

I prefer cattle farts.

Mine kicks on as soon as I turn the key to the on pos without even starting it. I've had no problems with it and it doesn't screw anything up so I don't see any issue.

yeah we're averaging about -25C to -30C here so far.

I like just "normal Earth cooling-warming cycles"

and it wouldnt be an issue where you live. but when your trying to turn over an engine with 300 000 kms on it, in -50c, you dont want to be blowing cold air against the near-frozen rad

You are talking about the little one in front of the rad right?
In that case I'd probably just disconnect it and see what happens.
