Engine/Transmission Separation Problem

Hey guys, first post here.

I have a stock 87 Toyota Pickup, 2wd, 22R-E engine with an automatic transmission. I am in the midst of pulling the engine out but I can't seem to get the engine apart from the transmission/torque converter. Right now there is about a 2 inch gap between the two (enough that the alignment pins are out). Do you have to unbolt the flywheel from the torque converter? Doesn't look like there is room to do that though.

I've tried various combinations of lifting or lowering the engine while raising or lowering the transmission but no go. My buddy and I have tried using crowbars and pry bars but no luck. Are there any secrets or rules of thumb for this? The Hanes manual wasn't much use.

Much appreciated!

Jason

Yes, you should unbolt the drive plate from the torque converter. It is possible to remove the tranny without unbolting the TC but its harder and you may damage the seal on the TC. There should be enough room to get a wrench on one bolt at a time, you just have to rotate the crank around to get them all. When going back together take note that one bolt is different than the others, put that one in first.
