You could but why would you want to? Toyota puts a cooler on the Automatic transmission for a reason, as do most automatic transmission equipped vehicles.

why u have a oil cooler on ur motor already the 3.0 has one on both the 4wd modle and the 2wd modle. im not to sure about the 4cyl but i do not think u need one unless you do alot of towing and if so u wouldnt want to regear before u put a oil cooler on just my two cents

I have seen many people do this, not just on Toyota's either. Every bit of cooling helps.

i guess i should explain my situation a little more. i am upgrading my ct20 to a t3 t4, oil only.

my truck is a 5 spd so no need for the trany cooler, except maybe a oil cooler for the turbo. i would like it better then adding another oil cooler.

my question is would it cool the oil enough? while being safe for the motor.

I wouldn't use it for motor oil, I'd be worried about it being too much pressure for the ATF cooler and lines. The engine has higher oil pressure than the transmission. Some of those radiator coolers have been known to rupture even with ATF run though them. Search "strawberry milkshake" for more details. If you don't use it just plug the lines in and out of the radiator, that way if the ATF cooler ruptures you won't lose all your coolant in the middle of no where.

I think you will be just fine using it as a cooler as the auto trans cooler in the radiator are fairly large for the oil to pass through. I would prefer an external cooler though, You can pick one up at your local pick a part for cheap off of a heavy duty Ford or Chevy truck, even some of the older 70's large Ford cars had them. Mount it in front of you radiator or A/C condenser. It is always a good idea to have additional cooling for the engine & trans.

On my friends Astro van with the 4.3 V-6, the factory radiator had a trans cooler & a oil cooler built in.

Either way, good luck to you.

I've seen first hand those internal coolers rupture. Don't risk another source for coolant to get mixed with your oil (destroying the engine AND the transmission) just to avoid a $40 external cooler.
