Engine Swap Questions

Hello Everyone,

I am swapping a 22re from a 92 pickup 4x4 into a 94 4runner 4x4(minus the engine) that was originally v6. I know there are more worthwhile swaps out there but this kind of fell into my lap and I happened to have the wrecked pickup with a good engine in the back yard so....The pickup has B03A axles(4.10's and 2 pinions) and a W56 tranny, the 4runner has G284 axles(4.30's and 4 pinions) and a R150f tranny. I am hoping I will be able to swap the bellhousing from my w56 tranny onto the r150f tranny and use all the 4runner running gear. Anyone know if that will bolt up and work ok? From what it looks like I will have to cut the old motor mounts off the frame of the pickup and reweld them in the 4runner. When I removed the 22re engine I noticed some other bolt holes in the side of the block that were further back, they apeared to be bossings for other mounts. Are these bossings for the early style mounts? The look like they may be in just the right place to bolt up to the v6 mounts which would make my work a whole lot easier. Anyone have experience with this type of swap? Any tips would be welcomed.

hmmm....i think if you part out the truck and get a wrecked 3rd gen runner or tacoma and swap the 3.4's out of them you will be sooooooo much happier with the engine....the 22re just isnt enough muscle for a runner, i have a 3.0 and compared to other vehicles it is a slug. search this site about 3.4 swaps and see for yourself

Should be not problem to do the swap. Unless you plan to sell it though your gonna hate the performance. You have to transfer over everything that goes with the 2.4 though. Pretty big job. The gear ratios should be no problem though.

Well it seems the bellhousings won't swap so I'm going to have to swap the tranny and transfer case, oh well. Haven't had much time to work on it since last post(hunting season hehe). I'm in the midst of ordering parts now. I ordered a LCE header and dynomax exhaust so hopefully that will wake the 22re up a little bit. I've been thinking about getting an eb 268 cam as well. The 4runner probably had a higher output alternator than my pickup did since it has power everything and the pickup was pretty plain jane. Does anybody out there have a 3.0 and 22r alternator to compare? I need to know if a 3.0 alternator will bolt up to a 22r. Since the 3.0 plug is different it would be easier to get the right one instead of rewireing the harness. I would love to see a picture of the heater hose routing for a 22r 4runner that has the rear heater. The hoses from the pickup are definately different. Thanks for the help. I'll post some pics when I'm done cleaning the gunk off(polishing the turd lol).

You need to swap over the wiring harness anyways. When I said everything I ment everything. Dunno about the alternator but I think they may be the same.

I know the motor mounts are different. I plan to weld the other mounts in. The engine harness unplugs from the chassis harness next to the computer. The 2 plugs are the same and I assumed they would be plug and play except for a few things such as add that the truck didn't have and one other thing I need to trace down the harness. Am I wrong in this assumption?

You need to check the pinouts on the plugs via FSM.. Don't assume they're the same.

There will be some significant differences such as injector plugs etc. It took me and a buddy 2 days just to swap in 3.0s so expect this to be a big job. This will be as much or more work as a 3.4 swap.
