Just picked up a sweet 88 2wd last night with only 129k miles on the odometer! The truck runs and drives like new but I check the oil cap and the dip stick and find black chunky sluuuudge! I got some motor flush fluid to ad before changing the oil but I am a little bit scared of a negative effect. I have done this before on a 5sf-e camry engine with the same issue and same milage with no negative side effects. Anyone here experience engine failure from a flush? speak now! or forever hold your peace!

 

I would run some auto tranny fluid or some sea foam to break down some of the sludge. If it's too far gone, nothing will help.

 

You should check out Flushing Oil Concentrate. The stuff is hella expensive($91 for a 250ml bottle), but it's probably the best product you're gonna find for flushing an engine.

When I got the 97 (218K miles) I wanted to do a flush since I didnt know its history. I bought Marvel Mystery Oil and when I dropped some of it to add the MMO it didnt look bad. After allowing to idle for about ten minutes and then dropping the oil was BLACK. It idles perfect not that it didnt prior but also seems to be more responsive and run cooler....

if you wanna go cheap put some diesel in the engine and run it for 5-10 minutes then drain your oil... works like a charm plus its cheap then the over priced stuff ATF works great aswell lots of detergeants in atf to clean allthe junk out...

 

Thanks for the tip I may try some Marvel additive next time. Same deal with me, the truck didnt really have any issues to begin with. The black junky build up on the dipstick and inside of the filler cap just buged me out but after using some cheap flush additive and draining the oil (wich was blacker then the inside of a coffin on a moonless night) and refilling with valvoline the oil on the dipstick is like checking the oil on a brand spankin new motor!

i've used the stuff from autozone in the past when i didnt know any better until opend the bottle and realized it was just a quart of diesel i paid about 5 bucks for... ya i was mad...

it sure did clean out the engine thou...

 

glad I am not the only one who uses transmission fluid to flush out a motor.

 

atf will clean the all the crapp out of a engine..

just remember when u got bad rings and your trying to make every mile count just add a quart of 90wt to your crankcase..

 

I've used some clear motor flush stuff, we charged people $10 on top of an oil change and just let it run for 10 minutes and it always seems to have helped, doesnt remove the residue on cap but it does on the dipstick (not that thats any indicator, but it looks good to the customer lol)

 

I've done it with a riding lawn mower before but never a vehicle motor though

worked like a champ in the 12hp Briggs

and what if you ran them together? super cleaning maybe?!?

 

I usually just add a quart of ATF to the oil run it for no more than 5 minutes at idle then drain. let it drain good though like maybe a 1/2 - 1 hour.

 

ok let it run at idle, i didnt know if you needed to drive it or anything?

 

Did you pull the valve cover to see if there is actually any sludge build up ?, some times moisture and crap build up on the inside of the oil filler cap, so that`s no indacation of what`s in the engine.

 

no do not drive it, do not rev it. just keep it at idle.

 

Surprised nobody mentioned Auto-RX. Check out some posts on bobistheoilguy.com or go to the website. Stuff worked great in my truck. Valve-train was clean as new after using a cycle of this stuff.

 

ya, 10 minutes at a idle is about all you need, just like he said about a quart will do the trick...

if you are worried about this borrow your neighbors lawn mower and try it out.. now dont go putting a quart of diesel in a 5hp lawn mower when i only take about 20oz of oil.. to start..

 

that reminds me of the time my mom put lacker thinner in the lawn mower in stead of gas( she thought it was gas). . . she was like oh wow look at it go! it like a high weed mower now. . . . then boom!!!!!! I thought it was funny as hell
