I'm about to change my oil, & I thought I'd flush the engine while doing this. My truck currently has no leaks, & runs great- I want to keep it that way, that's my main objective. Given that, would it be a good idea for me to flush it? I've read alot of stuff online sayign that the flushing products can knock loose gunk/ particles that can block the oil passages & cause oil starving, pressure issues. faulure, etc. If it is a good idea, what should I use? Is it oil based or more of a harsh solvent type stuff? I also read many places that unless I remove the oil pan & clean up the sludge that results from the flush, it won't be effective. I'd appreciate some experience here........

Cutting open your filters before you throw them away will sometimes show if there is a problem.

Personally I use Seafoam in my fuel once in a while and have used both Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil (not at the same time) to flush the motor.
Ive had no negative side effects and have noticed a bit smoother better running motor over the past 6 months.

 

Just by exp I believe an engine flush is useless unless you are rebuilding the engine which in any case you would clean anyway... pointless. I've seen many motors start knocking because of "Engine oil flushes" I recommend not to. It doesn't say in your maintinece scheduale from toyota to flush engine every xxx,xxx miles so don't do it. Just change oil and filter at the required intervals and you will be fine. "Engine Flush"= Useless way for auto industrys to make money and nothing more.

 

I've done flushes with an Amsoil flush product before switching from dino to synthetic. They recommend putting on a new oil filter, adding the product, running for 20 minutes at fast idle, and then replacing the oil and filter again. I've never had a problem though I doubt frequent oil flushes are a great idea - better to just rely on the detergents in the oil.
