Engine code problem and gas issues
Hello! This is my first post and I have been looking on this site and all the information individuals are posting is great! Here is my problem. Last night I was working away at my 93 4runner 3.slow and I started to get an engine code. No big deal, i jumped TE1 and E1 to get the code and I was getting several flashes. I was having a hard time to get them wrtitten down so I thought I'll just clear the memory by pulling the fuse and start over. So I did that and the engine light came back on. I then jumped TE1 and E1 again and now I am not getting any flashes just a solid glow. I tried again this morning and th same thing. Anybody got any clues?
Second problem. I bought this rig a month ago and I could smell gas right from the start. It did have a very slight leak coming from the tank (very top towards the front of the truck) but I thought that was very suspious seeing that I had less than a 1/4 tank of gas in it. I did some research and found that their are lines that run from this area to a charcoal canister under the hood. My question is has anybody has anybody had a similar problem and what to do to fix it? Is there some sort of check valve for the fumes that run to the canister? One other thing to add is that when I tighten the cas cap the pressure in there builds up pretty bad and that is when it will leak a bit. If I do not tighten the cap, the pressure is less and it does not seem to leak. Any suggestions?

1. You should get a steady half second blinking engine light if no codes. If it's stays solid, something is wrong. When you check for codes, are you jumping the terminals BEFORE you turn the key to on position? What were you working on when the first engine code showed?
2. There is a Factory Service Manual (FSM) posted here: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...fsm/index.html
You can find all you need to know about the fuel canister and how to check it under the 3VZE Emissions Control EVAP section. I'll save you the trouble of looking it up: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...76evaporat.pdf
Good luck!

Actually it was nothing mechanical I was working on when I got the code. Also the ignition was turned off when i jumped the terminals. Still looking for help!
As for the canister, that is not leaking it is the gas tank. I did blow compressed air through the canister previously and that did not help. I suspect there is some sort of seal on the gas tank is causing the leak or one of the return lines or something. Agian this only leaks when the tank is pressurized. It seems to have excess pressure when you tighten the cap.

I guess no one was able to give Cormel any solutions to his problem with the charcoal canister and such back when he posted. Here's some of my ideas as to what the problem COULD be.
I bought my 94 4runner in November and I noticed a mysterious gas leak coming out of the frame behind the front passenger side wheel(of all places). Dangerous. What had happened is the vent line on the gas tank that goes to the charcoal canister had fallen INTO the gas tank and was siphoning gas into the canister. The canister has a hose in the bottom of it which runs INTO the frame to drain out anything that gets in there, and was therefore causing gas to leak out of the most unobvious place. Check to make sure your vent line hasn't fallen into the tank.
Another problem could be that your gas cap is a nonventing kind, and you could just be building up pressure in the gas tank, thus causing gas fumes to back up into the charcoal canister....its a theory.
After fixing my siphoning problem, and installing headers and a dual exhaust system and all its doing better. The only thing I'm not too sure about is that I have a check engine light on all the time these days and the toyota people said that according to their diagnostic thing my EGR valve is sticking. I'm not sure if it really is the EGR valve, or if my charcoal canister (which is part of the EGR system) is crapped up because of getting gas inside of it. Anybody got any ideas as to whether getting gas in it would ruin it, and cause my EGR system to be fouled up? She's acting really sluggish, and has been for a while...
