eliminating cat & muffler

How loud would my truck be if i replaced the cat & muffler with a straight pipe? I was originally thinking of removing the cat, but after further consideration i'm thinking i want to cut the exhaust off right before the cat, replace it with a pipe that would be about the same length as the original one. I figure when i need to get it smogged again, I'll just clamp the whole setup back on. My main concern at this point is the loudness- would it be nice & rumbly, or unbearably loud? Any input as to how loud (decibals?) this setup would be?

I ran a straight LCE header for a few weeks until I had the time to install the rest of my new exhaust - it sounded like a V8! Fine at idle, but any gas and WOW it was loud.

1) probalby illegal due to noise (and you may get ticketed for not having a CAT if they pull you over for noise)

2) If you let your CAT 'sit' in between smogs, it could "go bad" - be careful there.

Very loud, and not very funny if you get caught without it

Spend the cash and do it properly

how about if i left the cat & eliminated the muffler? (replacing it with a straight pipe)- would the cat muffle it enough to not attract cops- i definitely don't want it crazy loud

Still loud. If your state has a visual then hog out the cat and put in an aftermarket muffler to save some money. I used a 3 chamber Flowmaster on my 22R. It is on the loud side but quieter than no muffler. Also you can buy the Ebay replacement cats for cheap like under $70 and almost all of the cats are free flowing anyways.

why dont you spend a lil money and do it right the first time? a magnaflow hi flow cat is 60-70 bucks and a muffler of your choice is 20-100 depending on what ya get. alot cheaper than the tickets you will be getting. lol

i didn't know they were that cheap- i just looked & can get a chamber type muffler (cherry bomb brand) for about $25 new from Summit Racing. My issue is that if i spend money on it & "do it right" i want it to be smog legal- i don't want to spend money on a cat & muffler, spend time installing them, then have to re-do it come smog time 'cuz they won't pass- so will these "high flow" cats & an aftermarket muffler (like the one i'm looking at) pass smog in WA?

and a muffler will not effect smog. you do not need one if you want it loud.

even with the cat it will still be unreal loud. if you want loud but not too loud keep the cat and get a glasspack.

So if i remove the cat & just keep it in my garage untill emissions test time, can it go bad? is there any truth to this? if so, is there a particular way i can store it so that it doesn't go bad after a year or so? also, how would i clean it when i wanted to put it back on? how about a seafoam treatment?

from personal experience, keep the muffler. otherwise you're gonna have a tractor, not a toyota.

i'll keep the muffler, it's in really good shape. but i do plan on cutting out the cat, replacing it with a pipe, & just using exhaust clamps with bolts so it will be easily bolted back on come emission time (i did this with my previosu truck-'90 2wd 22r PU & it make a noticeable difference in smoothness, power & sound)

my question is: can the cat go bad if it sits in my garage for a year? i heard they can stop "catalyzing" (yes that's a real word) if not in use for extended periods of time

???

how long do you think cats sit on shelves before they are bought?

it shouldn't be an issue, cats are platinum mesh around a ceramic brick, its not an issue
