Electric fan install questions

I'm planning on swapping out my shroud-less old electric fan, for a new shrouded Mercury Villager/Nissan Quest 2 speed electric fan.

I've already got the fan, and a thermostatic controller, but I can't help but feel like I'm missing some stuff. I've never installed/wired up an electric cooling fan, but I can imagine it's fairly straight forward.

I'm using a Hayden adjustable thermostatic fan controller. I'm hoping to start installing this soon, but I want to get all the parts together first.

I have no idea how to wire this fan up, or what any of the wires on the harness do.

Anyone who has experience with electric fan installs, please post!!!

Thanks in advance!!!

As far as the two speed control goes I'm not sure. I suppose you could put one on the thermo probe and the other speed to come on when the A/C is kicked on.

How many wires are on this fan? Pics might be helpful too. Now, on my flexalite, there's only two wires so you can make it a pusher/puller. I'd assume you could do the same with this fan unless there's circuitry there to prevent this. The harness you speak of are you referring to the fan harness?

I'm thinking I'm probably going to wire up the low speed to the thermostat, and just wire up the high speed to a toggle switch.

There are three wires in the fan's wiring harness. There's two wires(white and yellow) in going to one harness, and another small harness with one black wire. I can imagine it could probably be wired either way (pusher/puller), but it only mounts to be a puller.

That is a helpful site, although I'm not wanting to shell out $75+ for one of their controllers.

Good information on installs, though, but none that I've found that apply to me.

I'd say 12 for the battery to relay and relay to fan . Something like 18 would be fine for the controller to the relay wiring. The relay triggering is low amp stuff, no need for big wire there. Fuse for the wire size, as close to positive power source as possible.

What kind of relay do I need?

Also, do I need a relay for the toggle switch for the high setting?

yes. Yes, a standard 30 amp should work.

How do I wire up a relay? Do they have like sockets you put them in and just connect the wires, or what?

I'm using a 40 amp standard Bosch relay for the toggle switch connection on the low speed side of a Taurus fan. Note the high speed side of a Taurus fan spikes higher than 40 amps at start-up. I've seen some melted relays from guys running one relay to the high speed side. The start-up takes the most amps, thats one reason why the variable speed controllers are so nice. I have a completely redundant system using a Delta Current controller which doesn't need a relay.

Here's some good relay basics:

You can get sockets, but they are not really necessary... it helps if you think of a relay as just a remote controlled switch. It depends on the relay which blade on the bottom connects to what but there is usually a diagram printed on the side... one pair will be for the high current [motor/light] and the other for the low current control switch. The packaging that comes with the relay sometimes has a diagram/explanation

Mount the relay in a dry location if you can (under the hood near the factory fuse box is a good choice)

Yeah you can buy plugs with a wiring pigtail attached but they are kind of hard to find, or I usually just use insulated spade connectors (crimp the wire to the spade connector and plug the spade to the relay post).

Ok. I've got some reading to do from the links on your previous post. Then I'm going to get moving on this project.

Anyone know what relay to get for this? I know they have quite a few different kinds, with different plugs on the back of them.

I'm not real great with electrical stuff, so it's kinda like going back to kindergarten for some of you, but it's a challenge for me. lol

Today, I got all the wiring finished for the swap. I didn't have the right blade for the sawzall to cut the villager shroud. I did install my old shroudless electric fan. I used 10 gauge wiring for the ground from the fan, and power to the fan/relay. My old fan cycles on and off with the controller at right around 190(I think). It also spins much faster than before, since the old wiring was extremely small(think speaker wire) and very restrictive. I also took the opportunity to replace my battery terminals. My power windows seem to be a bit quicker with the new terminals also.

I'll post some pics up when I can get the shroud cut to size.
