Drums are getting hot...

Well i searched and searched. I hav eread every thred and found i kind of have a mix of a few problems.

I recently installed new rear shoes and new after driving say 10 mintues my rear drums are searing hot. from what i have read everythign is in and adjusted correctly. I took out old pads replaced, backed of the adjusting screw and then used the ebrake till the adjusted would not longer click anymore.

Now after awhile the brakes get hot and seem to kind of pulse. This almost seems as though there is air in the line and they need to be bled. Could this be why they are gettign hot?

Any help or recomendations are welcome

When the truck is on a jack and the rear tires/axles are off the ground do the tires spin freely (no braking, or ebrake applied)??

If they're getting hot its probably because they're rubbing constantly. This is can be caused by a few things.

If its pulsating (like it feels when you have warped rotors) the axles could be warped.

Drums might need to be turned.

Adjusting screw is caked with mud and is to tight.

i could probably think of more if i was more awake... I've replaced both my rear brakes completely and both axles were warped (pulsation feeling)... new chromoly rears.

i am fairly sure all of the adjustment is right but what coudl be cause my brakes to get hot? the pulsating was very minor and did not happen everytiem to brakes were apllied if there was air in the line could this cause the brakes to be applied even when the pedal was not because of expansion in the line?

air is not the problem, it does not compress like hydraulic fluid. signs of air are a spongy pedal. bleed em again to be sure though.

sounds like something is too tight mechanicly. back off the adjuster a bit and make sure all the parts move freely.

well i am defiantly going to bleed them anyway because the pedal does feel a little spongy. I wil ltry backing them off a little bit again. What are the signs of warped or excesivly worn drums?

Hot Brakes

If the brake drums are hotter than the norm. something is dragging the pads on the drum,(brake cable not fully releasing or parts put on wrong or defective parts. pull the drums back off & see where it is dragging on the pad it should be worn evenly around the pad.If not, it could be out of round drums or wrong or bad pads. I'm guesing what it could be. hope this helps
