DOH - Vibration problem SOLVED (always check the simple stuff)
I've been chasing a "vibration" problem for the past few weeks.
Bear in mind that I rated drive the truck, and Im in the process of getting it back on the road.
I swapped out the U-Joints in the rear shaft. Better, but not away.
Pulled the rear drive shaft and drove it in FRONT wheel drive.
Nope. Still an issue.
I noticed some play in the Transfer Case output flange. Will have to see if I can pull the tail housing and bearing from the spare XFer case.
Finally, was reading up on the web and there was a bunch of comments about "tire out of round" or tire out of balance.
Gee...
The tires are probably the FIRST set of 31x10.5 I got, because the "spare" set of tires are 234/75R15 (If I got a second set of tires, I would have kept two old ones as full size spares)
Uh - as far as I can tell - at least circa 1999?
And oh 60K to 70K on them (I use snow tires in the winter, so they get less wear for the miles)
And - the truck was stored for oh 8 years.
On those tires
Slowing losing air
(at least it was not in the sun)
Can you say FLAT SPOT
Can you say Belt Separation?
So I take the day off run errands, and I put the rear shaft back in.
As I'm spinning the tires to rotate the shaft, I get "poked".
Oh - is there a nail in the tire...
Nope.
(You'll notice, not only is a chunk missing, but that the tire has a "hump" in it.
Can you say - blowout soon?
Anyway. I had ordered new tires from CostCo, and they'll be here soon.
I'll swap on a pair of 235/85R16 on the rear to get me to the shop
(I have to use a pair, because I have a Torsen/TruTrac diff with the 4.56 gears)
Gee
I wonder why I have a vibration?
