Now then, everything is nice, except if I roll down the back window.... GAG CITY!!!! the exhaust goes right up into the window.
I know for the models made from 96 on, had that top end fareing piece, I am not sure that helps at all, but is there something like that for 1st gen pilots?

Your talking about a rear window deflector, check out J.C. Whitney, they have some universal ones that should fit. There also been a couple of people here that have found the rear deflectors at pic n pull off of later model vehicles.

yes, but the question still remains; does the piece do what it was designed to do, or do you still smell the exhaust in your back window?

 

i never had that problem with my '86 4runner (since your post refers to an '88)
One thing you don't say is if the person with the '88 had a complete exhaust that was properly routed to the side of the truck.

I did not have a rear air deflector, just a properly routed stock exhaust

Think about this: is your exhaust properly routed? I had an '86 4runner, ran with the rear window down all the time and never had this problem..no rear deflector, just a good exhaust

 

He's not saying his exhaust, the air in the city in general right? I mean, I live a few hours away and hear Houston traffic is horrible, so I'd imagine he was talking about that, not his exhaust routing.

Surprisingly, that little wing actually does make a difference

 

I put a deflector on, and no more exhaust in the rig. I used one of a second gen and just made up some brackets. I also have a rotted out tailpipe, so I can't speak on the whole intact exhaust not having the problem, period. Pretty easy to do, you just have to drill into the top is all.

 

yeah, I am deff talking about the exhaust. Tried to roll with it again, with the rear window down; that lasted about 5 seconds. I will have to check the exhaust pipe , to see if it is going off to the side. As for that little spoiler up top- I have seen 2 types. One that is lifted off of the surface about 2 inches, and points it's blade down the back of the rnr. I can see where this would work.
the other one, just looks like a normal rear spoiler, sits flat on the back of the vehicle, and the blade points either straight out or slightly up, to direct airflow totally away from the vehicle, and I imagine it also pushes down on the rear of the vehicle a bit.
Now then, I could see this being very helpful, with the mighty 22re engine, and lets say I was coming out fast and moving 3 wide, from turn 4 at Darlington, and my rear end was getting a little loose and squirrely. So you are telling me, that the little spoiler I described above, that sits flat, and points out or slightly up, will also help keep the pipe smell out of the back? If so, then I am deff going to get one.
