I just went with a 12mm wrench and tightened it until the grommets were squishing as mentioned.. so far no leaks.

Thank you to everyone for your input!

And yet another 22re FSM (90-95 4Runner) shows 43 in-lb (computed to be 3.5833 ft-lb) on page EG1-35,

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ommets-248627/

I'll take finger tight and a 1/4 turn for $20......could Toyota make it anymore confusing??

Sure..it's up and running now. Broke in the 268 cam and pretty sure the rings are set, hardly any smoke at all after start up. The LCE header and pacesetter cat back exhaust sound perfect for me (not very loud). I ditched the included pipe clamps for both and had them welded. I have to mess with the TPS this weekend because it's either broken or not set right, gotta check out the 4crawler write up. My registration expired yesterday, so even though I paid the fees, I gotta get everything adjusted so I can go pay for a smog (california) test, then they'll send me my tags.

Look for my build-up post in the next week or two in the build section, I'm doing a retroactive build up to today and then will continue on with my ZUK/Bilstein shocks upgrade, Interior 4runner upgrade (already have all the pieces from the yard), and then my Can-Bak renovation install ($250 off of craigslist!)

ha! you just like it cuz I painted the block red like yours ! LOL..... gave me a good chuckle after throwing my ohm meter across my work bench...I finally figured out I need some alligator clips rather than trying to hold the probes like a pair of chopsticks to the connectors and turning the tps with my other hand...boy was that a fail!!!

Gonna wake up early and grab some spare tps from the wilmington yard in the morning while I browse around just in case...the gen 2 4cyl camry's use the same tps, oh yeah, and pick up some dang alligator slips

Well no wonder my stupid valve cover grommets leak...
I torqued down to the spec. I thought it was way too much torque. I even re-calibrated the torque wrench. I took the FSM as holy toyota gospel.

My grommets are smashed right down and leaked oil all over my clean (now dirty) motor. Time for some new ones. Finger tight and 1/4 turn more. Done.

I need to get a new set of those half moon grommets. Do those come in a rebuild kit or do I have to purchase them a la cart?

Hey Grego, let me know next time you go, whenever you go, and I'll do the same(If I can freakin remember! lol)..... I mean, we can look out for each other for things one might need. And, well, ALWAYS ASK ME if "I have one of those"..... as I have quite a few spare parts(Some I'll part with, some NO WAY, lol)>..... But you get the point. Also, don't forget about Ecology Auto Wrecking, k? It's off Lomita and, I THINK, Avalon Blvd.)

I gotta say, ..... 1st Gen runners and older pu's(4wd) are getting VERY hard to find in there.... I think there's an outfit that's buying them up! I know there are 'buddy's' of the guys in Wilmington Pick-your-Parts that get 'calls' when they come in.... cuz EVERY TIME, before they've opened, the 3rd Members are ALWAYS gone! Plus more that I've noticed, but IT'S TICKING ME OFF! I thought they were pretty fair.... but maybe there's a 'kickback' system going on... and if so, FORGET IT! lol. I've seen ONE, no kidding, ONE 1st Gen 4Runner in those yards in the last couple months! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! lol.

Good to know on the Camry thing.... You mean 86-91, right?

Hey, Stuwy, .....

NO DOUBT, the method above that you re-mentioned, .... THAT'S how to do it I mean, ....9# on the Water pump bolts, right? How many of us have SNAPPED ONE OFF while doing just that? I always replace those studs when I do that job....as well as all the bolts... it's just WORTH IT, ya know?

Jared, .........

Call 22reperformance.com, ask if they'll sell just the half moons, ....if that's what you want?????? Otherwise, they sell a good kit at www.LCEngineering.com , www.22reperformance.com and www.engnbldr.com ..... Plus many more.... I like the LCE Kit, Personally, and it's one instance where they're not too overpriced(at least they WEREN'T, when I got em, lol)...

I will say, ..... ORIGINAL Grommets(the 4 that hold on over the studs), ...... they are ONLY gonna come from Toyota.... I Have had to cut two different ones and also, on another, remove the bottom washer(Some kits have grommets with 2 WASHERS, top AND bottom(WTH???? lol), only showing rubber on the lip portion that actually goes into the valve cover).

Ok, will do. I've been to Ecology also, had some good luck there also. Had a busy day today but it paid off and I passed smog Being a member of Southern Cal Auto AAA paid off and I got my "2013" decal straight from them after passing, beats the heck out of going to the DMV for anything. Check out my measured numbers vs. maximum and average....the guy was impressed.

About the TPS, yours may be different, I don't see your 4runner on the list for my pickup. I just went to toyotapartszone and then found the TPS part and clicked it, then there is an option to select "All Vehicles" which shows all the cars that the particular part is for, and this is the list that came up for mine.

Hey, I know it's been a while since you've used this thread, but I'm wondering how you cleaned up your valve cover? And what you used for paint and how is it holding up? It's time to do mine and I'm looking for advice.

Thanx.

Are you talk'n to me?

If so, the paint on all my pieces, including valve cover, engine block, head, etc..., look just like the original photos except with a little dust on them. I used acetone to clean the valve cover up and then mineral spirits. Then used dupl-color engine primer and engine paint. I used masking tape to get the black down the center and then sanded the paint off the "TOYOTA" with different grades to get the polished aluminum look. Then used dupli-color engine clear coat.

I think one of the key components is taking your time and letting the paint dry before driving around. Mine probably dried for about a month before i started the engine....I was moving slow.

Pretty much did what the Taxi Driver up there did ^^^ ! hahaha. But I painted the whole valve cover High Heat Engine Paint/Alumicote color... Then taped the letters and surrounding area of the recess and painted the inset red. I'm sure I did it the hard way.. I should have just sanded down afterward and clear coated... But I didn't, lol. Still, it was fun.........
