turn the gear just a bit. DONT try to jam it in, or you will damage the gears. the 22r has a sort of "in between" where the dist will sit down just a bit, but not go int. Make sure the engine is at TDC, and the rotor is pointed at #1 on the cap. It should be perfectly on to line up correctly.

you're hitting the in between right now, hence why the distributor wont sit down right. Try turning that gear just a bit to get it to pop down

i tried that for about 20 minutes, but to no avail....the rotor will turn when i turn the crank so it is partially engaging but i have a full centimeter gap between the distributor and the block

hmm, well, it should sit down all the way then. Try taking your valve cover off, and making sure it is engaging the gears properly.

Make sure you re-assembled everything on the cam properly and torqued down the bolt. If something is off a little, then the distributor drive gear will be too far forward and not line up correctly.
