I was faced with the same scanario when I put an 88 3.0 in my 95 but I was able to put the 95 dizzy in the 88 3.0. But was contemplating the above strategy I just got lucky the new dizzy is comparable in the older motors

 

instances like this makes me realize why so many people ask for the 88-89 3vze wiring manuals as they are not in the 88 FSM and some things are not compatible using the 90-95 manual or the 93 pickup manual. lol. At least we know the two dizzys are compatible now.

 

I broke down and bought a new one.... $450 at napa.... ouch

That's good to know. But why did they change them after 91? Is the 92-95 better in some way? If so, that's no fair, I want one too.

I guess it probably doesn't matter. There's significant differences between the two though, besides the different colored wire. So much so, it would surprise me if you can swap them and still have compatability with the different ECUs.

Here's an 88 wiring diagram just because. Notice it also has the black wire and not the yellow. Which we all know is wrong for an 88, but confirms they're the same wire.

 

I know the new distributor is compatable with the old motor but not sure if the old distributor is compatable with the newer motors, if you look back at the pictures you'll notice that the old distributors have that long shaft after the teeth. I dont know if they will fit in the newer motors. The new dist. does not have this extension so there for is a non issue.

As far as the ecu was concerned the 95 distributor matched the 95 wiring harness and ecu, the only issue was wether or not it would work in an older 3.0, now as far as a newer distributor working with an older ecu, I have no idea.

 

Looking at the 88 diagram you're right, it does have the black wire. So why does my other dizzy have a yellow one? I was out at a pick yard yesterday grabbing some hubs, and checked out some other dizzys.... a 1991 runner had the same wiring setup mine had. a 1990 runner had the same one as well. a 1988 truck had the black wire. and a 1993 was missing the dizzy, but had the plug on the harness showing a blade style.

 

dont know about the diagram but I was under the impression that pre 92 dizzy's had the yellow wire, pig tail, and long shaft.

And that 92 and newer had the black wire, no pig tail, and short shaft.

 

Hello, i have a 90´3vze that as a problem and i need your help to try to solve it.
About a year ago i had a short circuit and some wiring were burn. The wiring connector of the distributer toast and the runner stoped working. I changed the connector and notice that the distributer has 4 wires (green, red, white and yellow) and the rest of the instalation has (red, white, green and black).
I connected colors with colors except the black that i connect with de yellow. With this configuration the runner is dead, no ignition. So after many tries conected the green with red, red with white, withe with green and yellow with black. It start, left a engine code (RPM signal) has a unstable low rpm and when i exceed 3000rpm it dyes and i have to stop. whait some seconds and turn the ignition on again. Sometimes after 3000rpm it has a complete loss of power and vibrates as some cilinders where stoped.
I changed the sparks, spark cables.
