Differential question
Hey
I'm looking into putting 4.11s on my 4runner. My question is are the rear and front differentials the same? In other words, could I buy two assembled differentials from Marlin Crawler and be able to put one in the rear and one in the front?
I looked at them and they do look different but I'm not sure if they really are or if it's just me.

Hey Adam!
If you wanted to run 4.11's you would probably be able to get factory 3rds from someone who has upgraded theirs.
In 86-95 4runners the front is a 7.5" and the rear is an 8"
Unless you have a auto v6 4runner with the big tire package than you already most likely have 4.11's from the factory though

yeah, front and rear differentials are different in almost all situations
however, the gear ratio (4:10 in this case) must be the same in both front and rear
[rant]
the ratio 4.11 only exists in diffs from 82~83. after that, they went to 41:10 tooth gears that gave a true 4.10 ratio. the issue is that a lot of people write it as 4.1:1 which gets mislead to 4.11. if it is a diff from 84 and later (including early tacomas), it has 4.10 (also written 4.10:1) gears.

Awesome. Thanks for you guys' help. Cookie Monster, that really cleared things up for me cause I was look at the 8" carriers from M.C. and they didn't look like my front differential until I checked out the 7.5".
Thanks again guys.
Thanks again guys.
