Figured I would post on this thread them start a whole new one... I have a 92 4runner 210000 miles. The engine is giving problem after problem and I'm getting sick of it. I'm just thinking recycle it and take my loss and just leave it, but my dad insiste that I put a new engine in it for 1500 bucks do the work ourselves and sell it. I payed 1350 for it and put about 300 in it now so about 3000 that would be invested in it. I wouldn't want to keep it so could I get my money out of it and buy a taco or would it be better not to waste my time and just get rid of it. Thanks for any help.

Sell it like it is for a project truck. At that milage its pretty much time for an overhaul anyway. Seems to me it would bring more than than $2k with a good engine. Used up this away bring insane money for essentially worn out vehicles.

Thanks for your input. I agree with you and think the idea of putting a lot of money into an already old car that will have more problems anyway. How much do you think I can get for this as is?

here in NY; 4x4's with broken engines & transmissions are going for $1000 to $2000 on craigslist, depending on condition. Road salt kills sooner rather than later. I just saw a 2005 Toyota corolla with 100k plus miles on a dealer lot for $10k Just unreal. Shipping is about $700 by 18 wheeler so try an ad.

I bought one of those 216k miles, drove it home and have been workign on it since.. about 2.5 months now. I also paid $1400 for is (guy put on brand new tires otherwise I woulda haggled some more) anyway I'm in about $4100 now but I plan to keep it as an everyday driver. Once it actually starts (waiting for new distributor delivery) It is quite a bit of work, especially if you're just a weekend warrior of a mechanic like I am. I plan to spend a few hundred bucks yet to redo the interior. Essentially it will end up as a ''new'' car and cost me about $5k, in addition it is a toy (the real reason to get a 4runner for me was the Toy part)

i struggled with that damn car, fixed everything, dropped a rebuilt engine in it. It runs, but there's always some little thing going wrong. I got a used 96 4 runner with the 3.4. god, that car is a dream. drop that puppy, and put your good money into something that will work
