Custom radio/cb box?

Custom radio/cb box?
Anyone ever made a box(I'm thinking wood), to replace the stock plastic area that the radio is in? I want to cut out the plastic and make one to custom fit the radio, a cb radio and whatever else I plan on throwin in there. I'm thinking it might make more room for goodies.

Do it. It's your truck and skys the limit with customization. Not really sure how much room you'd free up especially with wood.
What kind of stereo do you have? Double-din/stacked or single unit with pocket underneath? A lot of people choose to give up ashtray to install cb and retain all the other factory look.
Not really sure how you can really improve the stock stereo location though, and not really sure what parts you're looking to cut out since the pocket under the radio could easily house a cb with a bezel/trim piece once removed - it'd be just like a double din setup.
I think I've seen custom boxes that replace the lower plastic trim/pocket that goes against the floor in front of heater parts. Usually it's just gauges, but I've seen CB's and equalizers placed there.
I chose to keep all my factory look and get a self contained CB where the guts are all inside the handset.
You could also build some custom housings for up on ceiling, like where newer cars have sunglasses pockets etc. Some people mount CBs there.

what truck are you working on? If you have a 4Runner or LC with rear heat you won't have a lot of room to play with

Yeah, it's an 87 Runner. And I was talking about the dash. The best image I can come up with in my mind is a rhomboidal shaped box. So the front and back angle forward at the same degree to get out of the way of some stuff in the back. My rough measurements where about 12'' W x 12'' H x 6'' D. It would stick out a coule more inches on the top then stock but I think that is fine. A box that size would give me way more room then the stock set up. The only issue I see as of now is securing the glove box mount on the left side, because I would take that metal support out.
It is a single unit radio with nothing underneath, I think someone tried to steal it from the po. I know I can fit both of them, I just want more. I would take out everything from underneath the air controls all the way to the ground and both sides.

full size cb location install
i have a 97 runner and i wanted to install my cb under my radio but the galaxy dx 919 but it is to long so after looking for a decent place to install i came up with ceiling mount i removed the map light and rearview mirror and it mounts there perfect no cutting just bolt up and it looks amazing with all the wire ran correctly but if you do this make sure you use a 90 degree for coax coming out of radio so it lines up with the head liner.
