Cruise control downshifting problem?

I have a 93 4Runner with the 3.slow, and we know they're not the greatest out on the freeway at 75-80. However my cruise control has started to down shift to 3rd all the time, not just on inclines. If I control the gas, it stays in overdrive (so I know the motor or tranny isn't the problem), but if I turn on the cc it downshifts to 3rd and screams over 4000rpm. I found some old post with the issue, with no solutions. Is there any newer info on a remedy?

Can't speak to the 3.0/auto setup, but my 22RE/A44d setup is the same. I assumed that it was intended, as the 22RE isn't the strongest, but mine goes into kickdown IMMEDIATELY when I hit the "accel" button. If I hit the throttle manually, it won't. I think it's meant to be that way. Also, one thing I noticed is that it is WAY more touchy to kickdown on mild freeway inclines when first starting out. After a few miles and completely warmed up, it's not as apt to do that. 2/100ths of a dollars worth...

Mine did that new from the factory, the slightest little hill and out it came. It was disturbing to me because I was trying to hold the engine rpms down during the break-in period. I took it into the dealer and they claimed it was normal.

Funny thing since I put in a 3.4 it almost never does it (same cruise control).

now....what about that same problem plus cruise control kicking out when under load?

it seems that there are not many topics on this particular subject.

Haven't had a towing or steep grade situation with my cruise to test/experience this with my 'Runner, but my old El Camino would do that. Seemed like once the cruise couldn't "keep up," it would automatically shut off. Hmmm....
