cross-threaded brake line

I've cross-threaded a brake line. I think my chances of finding an NPT tap (Toy brake lines are NPT right? EDIT: nope, no brakes appear to be NPT) are slim near where I live. My plan at the moment is to file the cross-threaded threads off and try and get it in straight next time.

Suggestions?

Just what connection did you cross thread??

If it is a short nut you maybe able to swap to a long nut and get it to seal

Which gets me to thinking it would not be a bad idea to have a tap in that size

Ok, here's what I learned- brakes fittings are not NPT, they're regular metric thread (don't know the thread pitch though). What I did was buy the last Japanese brake fitting from the parts store, and borrow a double flare brake line kit. I slipped the fitting over the hard line, and flared the end of the line. It worked out luckily.

Same thing just happened to me. My brake line fitting is a M10-1. It took me awhile but I found a dye to chase the threads with. It worked out for me.

Did you thread the fitting on the brake line or the fitting in the drum / caliper ?
If its on a rear drum I think toy makes the fittings back there (the one in the drum) so that that the line strips not the thing in the drum. Good luck with replacing whatever.

Its a solid front axle, so its between the hardline that runs along the axle and the softline that joins with the caliper.

Yeah, thought of that, but I didn't want to hunt around parts store and deal with justifiably clueless parts people in a search for a obscure tool. Its rare to be able to find anything metric in th parts store, let alone a tap and die for metric brake fittings.

Yea I had to buy a 35 dollar tap and dye set at harbor freight to get the SOB. I'm returning it monday though. My other option was to buy a new hard line from advanced but it was about 9 inches longer than stock. That would have been a pain to bend and fit.

I don't know if you can borrow a double flare kit, but its not too tough a job. you could chop off that 9" and reflare the line.

Also, its die, not dye, I keep thinking you're talking about a colouring pigment haha
