Anyone have any insight about these kits? I'm wondering if these kits really do improve idle and performance like they say they do.

Depends on the price. I have a Summit box, made by Mallory. I still use the stock ignition as a trigger so it it craps out I can switch back to stock.

All in all, it adds a little. Really depens on the setup you currently have. Probably going to have to add a MSD converter and a diode.

 

I had the same crane kit. The truck ran....worse. Or not any more efficient than I was hoping. I did retain the coil though...

 

if your ignition is sparking and making the engine fire now without any problems, i seriously doubt that this will add any power or performance to the engine.

 

I guess i'm just wanting my truck to idle smoother. Sometimes it seems like it stumbles from time to time. My current mods include a downey header, high flow cat and miffler with 2 1/2 inch piping, k&n filtercharger kit, flex-a-lite fan, and an lc pro engine. I recently had the fuel injectors cleaned and cleaned the entire intake setup. I'm just wanting my investment to purrrrrrrrrrrrr like a kitty.

I've been debating on changing the 02 sensors to see if that will help. Any ideas?

 

I went with the MSD on my 22re ran well till it shutdown on me so I disconnected the MSD and went back to stock with just the MSD spark plug wires and to me that set up runs better.
I think the MSD,Crane ignition boxes works well with carburators.I have a 6A on my Corolla 3TC and its cheaper than the stock ignitor.

 

I had an MSD on my V6 and it was kind of iffy if it really helped at all. On most modern cars (yes 1991 is modern!) the factory ignition is pretty good, so the aftermarket stuff doesn't really 'add' anything to it. It was a whole different story with the 60-70's hotrods and their ignition systems...
