So I'm looking at an 87 4Runner with a 22re that doesn't have a factory AC unit on it. If I wanted to install an AC unit what would I need and how much would it cost roughly?

Does the term pain in the arse mean anything to you? I'm just guessing that by messing with mine that has factory air.
My recommendation would be to go with something like vintage air ~2k. The make entire systems to retrofit older cars. I'm sure you could retrofit, a OEM ac from a donor, but I think it would cost the same in the end and be a ton of work.

 

aftermarket a/c kits are around 1600-2000. you can save a bunch if you hit up a salvage yard and scrounge everything off of donors.
but it is a pain in the nether regions.

 

Wow, didn't think it'd be that much! Maybe I was in denial. What a pain. I finally found a great first gen that's actually local to me and it has everything I was looking for, all except no A/C.

The A/C really is just for my wife and kids, I honestly could care less.

When I did the body swap on my 90 the donor 94 came with factory AC I considered the install for a bit and will eventually do the install but I 3rd the PITA comments. But if you want to do it dont let the work stop you. The body swap I did was heavily not recommended either and YES it was work but the result is amazing so I say if you can get the donor stuff DIVE IN>

Pete, thanks. Yeah, I know...but the problem here is I would have absolutely zero time to do it unfortunately, let alone the time for sourcing out all the parts from everywhere. I may just deal with the no AC thing and suffer the consequences of my wife and kids not wanting to ride in it on hot days.

well I stand corrected. last I searched for my 91 that's what they were, on the ackits site.

 

Your 91 kit costs $868.17 if you have a 22re Cheaper if you have a 3.0......

 

if your really hung up on a/c (like me), let this on pass you buy. unless of course you like cursing, bleeding, sweating, trying to pound 4 lbs of crap into a 2 lb hole, and drinking too much beer.....oh wait, well, just drink too much beer admiring your 4runner with factory a/c. adding a/c aint like installing a cb.
