cooling problem

My truck is an 86 4xpu. I recently changed the thermostat and rad.
I cant get the air out of the system. Im constantly having to pull over cus the truck will all of a sudden over heat. Ive tryed parking on a hill and running the engine while compressing the hoses to get the air out. The weirdest thing is it doesnt happen every time i drive. Whats the deal? I have to mention my old thermostat was missing its gasket, like it fell off in the engine. Not sure but maybe its part of this problem?
