Hi. New to this site, and from what I've seen so far it's awesome. Anyway, my concern is that I have coolant in my oil. I picked up everything to do a head gasket and timing chain as it was noisy. After reading some threads I was thinking that my asumption of the head gasket was wrong. The truck has 210,000 km on it. I am very mechanically inclined as well.

...edit- nevermind... you said timing chain so...
could be the timing chain wore through the chain cover.

 

It could be the headgasket, or the timing chain couldve worn through the cover letting coolant seep in...

The FSM says you need to remove the head to do a timing chain so you will have to do it anyways..

I would get the head checked for any warping while you have it off

provided you're talking about a 22re

 

you can do the chain without removing the head- did it on my 91 22re
search around the fora here and you'll find several explanations of how to do it.

 

If you drop the oil pan, you can remove the timing cover without pulling the head off. To do that though, you really should re-seal the oil pan with RTV (which requires pulling the oil pan, which means dropping the front diff.

With respect to the front diff, I think you might be able to get away with leaving the front mount attached and undoing the two side mounts (rear mounts).

 

you dont have to pull the pan or the head to do the cover.just got done with one.carefully remove cover( didnt even raise the front of the truck,front pan bolts can be reached from front & reach underneath).after removing cover tap the front edge of pan down slightly to make install easier.do not put oil pump back on until cover is on.i put my cover on with oil pump attached & slightly tweaked head gskt.was able to seal without removing head though.of course if chain guide debris is in pan you may want to remove it anyway.good luck.

 

Anytime you have coolant in your oil, its best to remove the oil pan to clean out all the gunk....

Gonna cost you a few bucks worth of RTV (or FIPG) and a little time...

 

cant argue here.i had no coolant yet,did have both guides busted but no debris.
