coolant leak
I just bought my 1995 4 runner with the v6 and i now have a coolant leak from behind my timing cover and under my intake its hard to explain. I know its not head gasket i just havent had time to rip it apart and look yet. Thought i would post here and see if anbody has had this problem.
It seems to be coming from where the upper rad hose goes throught the timing cover under the intake.
thanks for your help

Sounds like it might be in the connection between the intake manifold/No. 2 idler pulley. You don't know until you pull it apart I guess.

Snapped a picture of my idler pulley. Sounds like the leak is coming from the gasket under the pulley. Gotta take the plenum off which is a PITA, but the pulley comes off with four bolts.

I will bet money its leaking between the upper idler and the manifold. NO, you do NOT need to pull the plenum to get it off. If you take off the front cover, undo the tbelt, cam pulleys and the sheild behnd the pulleys, you can unbolt the idler with a wrench or swivel socket. Make sure you spin the bearing to see if there is any noise. If there is, replace it. Dont just reseal it. Like I said, save yourself the aggravation and dont pull the plenum off

yea, mine is leaking somewhere behind that cover where the center hose goes into the engine.
is this a big deal? mine honestly doesnt leak that much, and i could live with just sticking coolant in every couple of weeks.

94whiterunner, Toytech96 is correct in that you don't have to take off the plenum. However, I personlly would rather take it off than take off the timing belt and then reset the timing. Either way, it involves a bit of wrenching. If you do repair the leak, take head to other's advice. Replace the common items while you have things dissasembled (PCV valve, idler pulley, t-belt, etc.).
