cone washer removal (manual hubs)

tapping the end of the stud works well... i had a buddy that we were working on breaks and i beat on the flange, then moved to the tinny screw driver method... and went off to get an "upgraded" tinny screwdriver when my buddy read in the hays manual.... "hit the end of the studs"
i come back to find him wailing on the ends of the studs with my 2 lb ballpeen.... the cone washers were poping off alright..... and he got a lession on how you use a die to recut the F'd up threads on the end of a stud..... I wasnt very happy as it added about an hr to the job....
in short... make shure you put the nut on flush with the end of the stud before you go beating on it.

In another universe, you are a God.
What technique to use depends on why the washers are stuck. I have had some hubs where a little tap with a hammer was all it took, the washers nearly flew off the studs. But I have had other cases where the problem was that the ID of the cone washer was a little distorted (probably from a prior removal attempt). On those, I had to use the screwdriver technique to open up the ID of the washer and pull it off of the stud. On that washer, you could bang on the hub or the drift all day long and that washer would not move at all.
On any given hub, I might find 3-5 washers that come off with the hammer/drift techinique, but then 1-3 of them that need the screwdriver. So you need to look all the removal techniques as a bag of tools. What tool you use for a given washer depends on why it is stuck. So often I see folks try one technique, have it not work, and give up.

Get one of those Irwin sockets for rounded off nuts .
All around great tools to have for working on these Trucks
living in the great salt Belt Cone washer removal at least the first time after 20 plus years can be real interesting.
I spray first with Kroil let soak at least a 1/2 hour.
My favorite method is to use the air hammer with a big soft custom made bit that is soft on the axle hub . It pops those little buggers right out.
If they are not getting replaced with Warn Hubs I make sure to never seize them before installing again.
