Hi,Im new to the boards but a toyota addict like the rest of you.I have an 88 4-runner 4cyl 5spd. I'm preparing to install a lift, prob 4-6 inches, gears, 35x12.50 tires, rear locker etc....

My big concern is my brakes. I've had alot of people say I should look into beefin up my stopping power. What is a good way to go about this and do they make like a full kit I can buy and put on or do I only need a few things?

I'm guessing Im gonna need to extend the brake lines. Should I get a special type of line (like a braided) ?

As of right now the brakes are stock and theyre stopping 31x10.50s

Ive never done this before, so if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appriciated. I have a feeling I'm gonna be learning as I go when I start lifting it cause I doubt theres a manual that shows how exactly to do it.

ya, you will need ext. brake lines... should come with the lift kit.

far as upgraded brakes, my stock brakes are doin A-ok with 33x12.50's, and should handle your setup. the front brakes on these trucks are pretty meaty...

 

Slotted rotors, high friction pads, stainless steel lines, high performance fluid.

My brake upgrade consisted of:
Powerslot Slotted Rotors
Axxis Ultimate Pads
Earl's Hyperfirm Stainless Steel Lines
ATE Super Blue Brake Fluid

 

If you do choose to go with upgraded brakes, I agree with slotted rotors, and good pads. I run Brembo slotted with Hawk HPS pads on my T/A with many quick 140 to 55 MPH stops without brake fade or warping.

 

arent slotted brake rotors really good at getting small rocks and grit caught in the slotts? Isnt that terrible for longevity and cause I would think it would sand the pads down mighty quick.

 

stainless lines, performance pads, and high temp fluid, you should be fine. If you find problems, then upgrade, no sense throwing parts at something that isnt a problem yet.

 

I would just see if you could fit Tundra brakes or the SR5 90-95 Pickup/4runner brakes. They are slightly thicker/beefier rotors but you'll need to get the SR5 calipers/pads as well.
