Angry Code 71, 22re Help Im away from my shop.

My 1995 22re shows a code 71. I put a new EGR valve on it. I found my brand new Cat converter was deffective, and was leaving on vacation, so I had no choice but to gut the converter. The truck runs fine, but would like to get the check engine light to stay off.Im 300 mile from my shop,or help so any advice would be appreciated.

The FSM says code 71 is related to the CA trucks. Just a thought, kinda dumb to ask, but did you make sure to plug in the EGR temp. sensor? Also, did you make sure to reset the ECM: pull the "EFI" fuse in the fuse block?

Other than that, the FSM says to check the VSV and circuit, and vacuum lines to make sure the EGR is working properly. Possibly a clogged passage.

The truck is a east coast truck, not a cal. as far as I know.Carfax said it was a east coast truck. The sensor is pluggeg in,and I pulled the EGR and no blockage. All vac. lines are hooked up and in place.

From my '94 22re service manual....

Code 71= EGR system malfuntion.

Diagnosis= With the coolant temp at 65C or more, 50 seconds from the start of EGR operation, The EGR gas temp is less than 70C and the EGR has risen less than 3C during the 50 seconds. (2 trip detection logic)

Trouble area
-open in the EGR gas temp sensor circuit
-open in the VSV circuit for the EGR
-EGR vacuum hose disconnected, valve stuck
-clogged EGR gas passage
-ECM
