a code 71 is a EGR malfunction code check out your egr system and see what the problem is it just probably needs to be cleaned. I had a code 71 but only because i took my EGR system completely out haha

How do you go about cleaning your EGR valve?

Code 71 is for the EGR Gas Temp Sensor. If your truck has the 3.0 and was not delivered to California (before mid 90's?) it doesn't have one. This is a common problem. Just pull the EFI fuse and be on your way. Of course, I have to CMA and tell you to have this fixed by an authorized facility if you do live in CA.
