Cod 71
So I pulled the code causing my check engine light and got a 71.
EGR VALVE MALFUNCTION
--EXHAUST GAS TEMPEATURE BELOW SPEC. FOR EGR CONTROL
--EGR SYSTEM
--EGR GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR/CIRCUIT
So where do I go from here? Is there a test for the gas temp sensor that I can perform or is this a just replace and see what happens sort of thing?

Thankyou. I guess I should pick one up and see what I can do about this. I'm quite a few months from my state inspection but don't want it to become an issue.

Victor - Don't just buy an EGR, they are pricy. It is probably fine. It can be tested by attaching vaccum ( a hand pump or a vaccum line from the engine) to a port on the EGR valve. If the engine runs rough or stalls, the EGR is OK. Look at the FSM on the sticky for full troubleshooting directions. The problem is likely to be a vaccum hose or something of that nature.
Good luck.
Good luck.

EGR valves can be cleaned with success. If the diaphragm has gone south, though, it will need to be replaced. They get old and brittle over time from exposure to heat and carbon gases.
