well i just recently purchased my 86 toyota 4runner, and the clutch went out yesterday(Just died on me during easy trail driving), I spoke with my girlfriends father who is a mechanic. He told me if i were to take it to a shop and pay them to install a new clutch it would cost me upwards of $600. But he came and took a look at it today and said we would install the new clutch kit for me for free, I would have to buy the clutch kit (i've taken a look an there around $150). He said it wouldnt be that hard of a thing to do, So im thinking ill tack on another $200 for him. So in all $350 is a lot of a better deal then $600 +. Just thought i'd share with you folks

 

Yeah, that'd be a nice way to score some points with your lady's pop. I mean most of my friends'll do a clutch job for a case of beer per hour (so like with these small tranny's it usually only takes an hour or two). On a bigger truck like my dodge diesel, I'll give them a $100 plus buy a couple of cases.

 

Though I'm sure that he'd enjoy having a nice shiny new flywheel and pilot bearing there ready to throw in, instead of having to wait for the flywheel to be machined and waiting on parts and whatnot.

Dunno what clutch you're going with. I've used two centerforce stage 2 (dual friction) kits, and they were great as far as grab, and longevity, though I've heard great things as far as marlins ceramic kit.

 

i did a clutch install on my old nissan 4x4 wasnt that difficult didnt even take the tranny all the way out just slid it back out of the way enough to pull the clutch out

 

I just changed my clutch on saturday the 10th! haha it wasn't that bad. Mine is a 91 SR5 4x4 3.0 The job only took about an hour and a half but damn that tranny is huge! lol anyways I payed about 180 for my clutch kit and new flywheel. Everything runs smoothly so far! Good luck with yours!

 

lol i was thinking the same thing about scoring with the gf's pops.
buy a case or so of beer, make sure he has a few extra hours in a day, and slide on buy, if hes not just a weekend mechanic, it wont be to hard for him, but be his gopher, IE, get him whatever tool or beer he wants when he calls for it

Never turn down free help. If you did turn it down, you wouldn't be on yotatech asking for advice now would you?
Just make the offer you're comfortable with and wait for the reply then negotiate if you've got problems. Yer all family now so just do it.

 

Do you have a service manual for the procedure? It makes it a lot easier to know what order to remove stuff
