Heck, if your 1st gen is in as good a shape as it seems from your avitar etc. then I'll bet you're a nice road trip shy of ownership of a 2nd gen to cut up! I got my 2nd gen in Los Angeles (the anti-rust belt ) with BJ spacers, OME coils, rancho shocks, exhaust and american racing wheels for a whopping $1800. Please please please please please don't cut that runner. Remove the cap and ride around topless for a while, or even get a bikini top like as been suggested earlier for greater versatility. Save the 1st gen from a fate worse than death - rusting apart with no roof because you couldnt finish the project before your interest or money ran out... It'd break a lotta hearts

but it sure would be easier with an open bed.
Sorry I was thinking of a dirt bike (motorcycle type thing), not BMX or mountain bike stuff... Sorry my bad.

What ever happened to that thing, the thread just kinda dies???

I don't know if you can really call it bobbing the rear because you're not talking about shortening it, but I'm talking about any kind of choppy molestation to a 1st gen 4runner that hadnt been preceded by a whole ton of hard earned trail damage. I in fact then suggested (if chopping and welding fall inside of your list of skills ) that it be considered that you may actually bob the rear of a 2nd gen 'runner and adding a shortened pickup bed to the rear, a-la hilux surf 'over there' style (+/- machine guns depending on your local laws and regulations of course ) like this one:

Dunno, thread died and the kid stopped contacting me. He may have sold it, scrapped it, clunkered it... it's been a while. A shame too. I probably would have done a lot of that differently, so if and when I do decide to hiluxify a 2nd gen 4runner I'd take those side windows all the way out and cut the back off in order to put on a real pickup bed instead of an empty trunk of a 'runner.

well im not gonna cut up my runner. i did some measurements and i don't think it will be worth it as far as a bed. its gonna be tiny. i def want to get a second gen to cut up for sure and if first gens keep poppin up around dayton for under a thousand like they are now i will probably get one that needs work and experiment with it.

i know kinda disappointing for those who wanna see it sorry

upon further inspection, maybe I just said bob... but that bed looked shortened to me because of the enlarged wheelwells. what then would you call that type of conversion that you posted a pic of in that case?

im like $150 in. you could do it for prolly $120. just dont over buy materials
and dont bother buying snaps, just by some velcro and snap clips. my avatar
is small but it has the pic of the snap clips, 4 on each side with velcro underneath. frame was constructed out of conduit so ultra cheap an basically top out of a painters tarp. If you wanna make a half top just build that, Im actually gonna cut my full top frame in half to do the same thing but im gonna make it bolt back on so i can have full or half. I dont have a back window on it, i know your looking for that, easy to make i have one made i just didnt get it sewn on cause i moved out from home. you could do this, its easy.

Conduit- $15
1" flat steel for bow/L's-$20
painters tarp-$20
velcro-$20
Plastic snap clips&strap-$25
Clear vinyl for window-$5

not even $120. basically the frame is a 30 min job. just dont underestimate the sewing portion. i did. mistake. i was a bit cocky just because i made a pillow once upon a time haha.
