I have been having intermittent issues with my 1986 4wd 22re Toyota pickup since I bought it. I got most of the quirks fixed but one still remains. It sputters and does like a mini backfire on deceleration, and sometimes when idling it does the whole sputter and popping like crazy. My rpm's seem to stay stable and the engine always shakes quite a bit as I think the motor mounts need some work. I also notice I have quite a lack of power on the lower end, the power curve really picks up above 3k, whereas my other Toyota's seem to have a much more linear power curve. It has trouble getting going from a stop, have to slip the clutch quite a bit and it always stumbles once it fully bites. Even at full throttle it doesn't seem to pick up all that much if any compared to 1/4 throttle. It didn't have the sputtering and popping issue when I first got it, but I didn't do anything to it before it started happening. I replaced spark plugs, wires, o2 sensor, EGR delete (Interesting story for that delete) checked vacuum leaks, timing, throttle position sensor, cold start injector, compression test was good (don't remember the numbers but it was good). A few weeks ago I was having really bad idle issues where it was sputtering bad and misfiring but after replacing wires and plugs it seemed to clear up for the most part, that is when I replaced the o2, checked tps, compression, and egr delete. Now the issue is the power problem and weird sputtering backfiring on decel. It's on 37's with 529's but had the same power and other issues with 35's. I'm not looking for crazy power but how much it struggles to get going and climbing any sort of incline seems abnormal. Not sure if the code #6 is related but it's the only code it has and I am not sure what else could be causing it. It starts and I can drive it around town fine but I want it to run as good as possible and be as reliable as I can get it so I don't have to worry about it leaving me stranded.
Did you switch the #3 and #4 spark plug wires on the distributor cap when you installed new wires. I did that on my 86 22RE and it had no power above 3500 rpm. I had to downshift to 3rd to have power to enter an interstate from a ramp. It started rough, but idle smoothly. Own the truck for 36 years and that was the 1st time I switched them. Firing order is 1,3,4,2 on the cap . After I switched them back it ran like a scalded dog. It surprised me how quick it was pulling to redline. Good luck.

just went out and checked that, all seems to be in order. Appreciate the tip though I'll always be sure to check that whenever I mess with any of that stuff! Thanks
