CEL trouble

ok everyone, i got an 87 runner with 22re. for some random and odd reason when i drive at 30 mph steadily for more than a mile, my CEL will come on, but when i rev it up a few times or adjust my speed to something slower or higher itll turn off. last time i checked the codes, all i had was code 5 for the o2 system, i replaced the o2 sensor, but now its back. any ideas where to start my search as to why this code is still in the system? and yes i have reset the ecu after i replaced the sensor.

When you replaced the 02 sensor did you buy an OEM Denso replacement ?.
If you bought a Bosch 02 sensor as a replacement, they don`t work well if at all in toyota engines, and that is probably your problem.

I'm not entirely sure of the brand. and I did not know that, when I get more money I'll have to try the Denso one. thanks for the info!!

You should be able to return the one you bought. You can get denso's for about $50.00

Disconnect the EFI fuse for a minute or so then see if it keeps happening.

And what type of O2 sensor do you have? 1 wire in the manifold by the head, or 3-4 wire down the pipe in front of the converter?

it's a one wire in the header.

So, a header and one wire?
Guessing the O2 is down where all 4 exhaust comes together.

No wonder. Air flow will cool the O2 and make it read incorrectly.
You need a heated sensor or wrap the header and O2 so heat isn't lost.

Go to www.densoproducts.com you can get an OEM Denso 02 sensor for $30.00 dollars plus shipping.

I bought my 02 sensor from them. Good service and shipping.

Kind of odd the O2 is there 'tween 1 and 2, and there's a flange on #3 cylinder.

it is odd, but it came with the truck so I don't have much of a choice on it right now

And looking closer, the flange on #3 looks like it would be better suited to an EGR or air injection connection than O2- looks like an O2 there would hit #2 runner.

Even still, a 1 wire on #2 will cool off enough if there's enough air coming through the radiator. The factory had the 1 wire in a boss in the CAST IRON manifold between 2 & 3, and the iron held enough heat to keep it hot.

You could try a universal, heated one and see how it goes. Not sure about your emissions laws there though.... There's another thread bouncing around about a similar issue so maybe look it up, if you haven't already.

well in my city, I think state also, they only go back to 1996, anything older they don't bother, and I did see something about goin from a one wire to a heated sensor, I'll have to look into that, thanks
