i got pulled over because my '86 22R was "too loud".
i was running a cheap turbo muffler and turndown...no Cat...with a Header.
i drove it with an open header for about a week...never got stopped..and it was LOUD.
as the cop was talking to me on how illegal my exhaust was...there was a '70 Nova that drove by running Open Headers, and drag slicks...the cop glanced over looked at the car...smiled and waved...and continued to preach to me about my illegal exhaust.
i can't wait until this years cruise night (this coming weekend), my '92 4runner with be there..and it's going to be running OPEN exhaust....no pipes lmao

Yeah and just because you don't have testing now doesn't mean it will never happen. As standards get more and more strict more States are having to add testing. We are probably going to have testing added here soon because of the southern winds up from Dallas/FW area.

gutted mine, sounded better, I could actually hear the exhaust over the clutch fan, but it ran like crap.
I had a 40 series flowmaster behind it.
I put the cat back and it runs 10 times better and actually has a powerband again, boy how I have missed that.
My advice dont do it, these motors love back pressure and from my experience a stopped up cat is better than no cat.
Oh, this was on a 3.0 pickup

yours prolly ran like crap because of the O2 sensor(s)
ima take mine off....no doubt
...in fact it will probably run with no exhaust for a bit outside my garage to get it on the trailer to go get the exhaust done

No motor/engine loves or "thrives on" backpressure! PERIOD! That's one of the most ignorant statements that can be made regarding engine performance.
