carpet carpet

the cargo carpet on my 86 4runner is in desperate need of attention and i'd rather not pay through the nose for a new one that is merely a sheet of wood (in my case deteriorating particle board) and carpet. The carpet on mine is dying, and the wood is cracked in places.
First Question: is this particle board the original setup or is it a crappy replacement job by a previous owner. I wouldn't be surprised if the power of the almighty dollar (or yen) dictated this setup
Second: to replace it, since it is simple a flat cutout, what do you guys tihnk about cutting out the same shape using marine plywood, and trying to find and extremely close match with a durable indoor-outdoor carpet.
Lasty: is there some way i can match exactly to this carpet, or is it just going to however close i can find?

And i'd be happy to do a short writeup with pics on how i remade mine if i could get some help.

I bought a 5x 8 grey rug at Walmart and cut it out to fit my truck.. It turned out well. I wish i had a decent cam but i don't ..the 5 foot wide is perfect, you don't even have to cut it on the sides
