right after posting that i went out to the store and a newer A6 in front of me turning left answered that question. While looking at the tails though mine are real orange, I wouldnt have expected them to be take the red paint so well even after sanding.

I think you may be right. Either way, the corners didn't turn out as well because the orange on the inside still reflects a bit.

I've done this (with Testors) on a few cars I've had in the past and after time UV really fades the red to a dull haze. You can re-buff it but it comes back quick. I tried applying Testors clear UV but that eventually just started scaling off and looked horrible so I wet sanded the lights back to normal. I think a better clear coat is in order for long term results...
what looks really nice is to get all clear tails and then only do the brake half red and leave the turn signal clear but install orange bulbs to be legal. That makes 2nd gens look like a 3rd gen.

I have heard of people separating the lens, and painting the inside of the lens (BMWs I think), haven't really looked at the 4runner lens to see if it's possible. They used a little heat and gently pried it apart, used some rubber type sealant to re-seal when done. Just another idea.

yeah the clear tails with the lower brake light area painted red reall really look sexay, but its all but impossible to find the clear tails anywhere, let alone for a reasonable price, they go for like $200 on ebay. if you can ever find them on there, that is
