california vs federal emisions

I just bought an 87 4runner that lived in california and some stuff is different. The O2 sensor is under the truck a few feet after the exhaust manifold whereas the o2 sensor in my buddy's sr5 is in the manifold.

Can anyone tell me what's up with the different locations and any other problems I may run into?

Would swapping the exhaust from an oregon "native" 4runner where the o2 sensor is up front cause any problems?

Sorry if this is a noob question. I'm new to the forums and even newer to the toyota world.

You'd also have to change the computer if you are swapping all to non-cali components. Oxygen sensor placement shouldn't be that critical as long as the computer gets the correct signal to the correct wire. Moving it closer to the manifold actually helps the O2 sensor to heat up and start working faster.

Swapping the manifold won't be an issue, just plug off the hole since you already have an O2 sensor in the pipe.

Don't bother taking off the Cali emissions stuff, you won't gain anything and your truck may infact run worse.

Only some of the current setup bugs me. I don't like where the sensor is for the reasons stated above. not trying to completely remove the cali stuff. just looking to make it easier to work on.

I like the o2 sensor above the manifold doughnuts so I can do what I want with my exhaust
