Buy rolled wreck? Or pass?

An acquaintance rolled his 86 shorty last weekend, was running fine, rebuilt tranny, etc. I'm having recurring head gasket trouble with my 85 with 22r, used a head shim because the head had been milled so much, lasted about 6 months, now I have a very efficient water pump. How much of engine/trans/stuff can I use out of the later donor? It's 22re, 5 speed, mine's 22r 5 speed, slips out of 5th occasionally. I'd primarily be interested in the engine/trans, but there's lots of other usable bits, it's 250.00 to me.
Space is limited, and I don't need it sitting around if I can't use the major parts!

$250.00? If you don't mind shipping parts you will do your mods for free and make some money. Do it, Do it, Do it.

I'll be looking for the parting out thread.

Grab it, swap in the motor and tranny and sell the rest to fill your wallet back up.

wait junkers, i dont think theres going to be an axle for sale.
he said the donor is an 86.
And IIRC
85 was the last year they used the longer/shorter(height wise) 22r(e) block.
So both your guys have diff style blocks and tranny's

Edit: I just realized you said you'd like to use both the tranny and engine from his truck, so it should work. I dont know if you'll need new motor mounts.
Someone else will chime in

You could use everything but you will be best off swapping the entire drivetrain. Your truck should have a G series transmission and forward shift t case. The EFI truck will have a W series transmission and top shift t case. So, it would be easier to swap it all. You'll also have to swap in the computer and wiring. I don't really know how "hard" that is. I would personally take a crack at it but don't know if I would get it right or not. You will have to figure in a number of things.

How mechanically inclined are you?
Do you have something else to drive around or will it be a problem if you don't complete it in a w/e?
How much room do you have?
How much time do you have?
Do you have a helper? (preferably knowledgable)

Give it some thought and then decide. Good luck.

You can use the rear axle also. It is 3" wider and it has a larger drum brake setup. If your truck has any kind of a lift and you run wheel spacers up front 1.5", the IFS rear axle will match the front axle width with spacers. The wider rear axle will eliminate tire rub on the frame as well. Now you will have another 3rd member as a spare too. Get it brother.

Good call. I forgot about that. Also the IFS steering box for crossover and the bigger brake calipers.

Do it!
I just picked up a 92 that had been rolled for $300 because I needed a new motor. I really only paid apx. $100 for a good running engine and a few other parts I needed because now I'm selling a few parts to various people and someone else is buying the rest so I don't even need to worry about getting rid of the junk!
My biggest issue that prevented me from doing this earlier was space so I can understand where you're coming from but if you can figure something out, even rent someones garage for a month, then you'll be rocking!

Good luck!
