BUY with a CODE 52???
I know someone with a '94 4Runner 4x4 with 163,xxx on it for sale ($2500 obo). Code 52 shows up. Guy has replaced water pump, timing belt, and tensioner. Also has done the pigtail and knock sensor...didn't resolve the problem.
He also has a rear anti-lock brake code coming on too.
I've read up on Code 52, and there seems to be mixed results...some work, some don't.
I don't want to deal with a bunch of headaches, but it appears to be a nice runner for the price.
Any thoughts are much appreciated!

The code 52 could be a problem with the ECU. It could be an easy fix or it could be a HUGE pain in the a$$. Did you try and disconnect the battery to allow the computer the chance to clear the code and check again to see if it's there?
The anti-lock light could also be a number of things. I'd also be suspicious as to why the timing was adjust back an extra 10*. It's obviously compensating for something....either a different cam setup or covering up another problem. Anything if fixable and if you're up for it I'd say buy it, but use these things to talk the guy down as much as possible. wouldn't pay more than $2k the way it sits now tho. You're going to have to sink a little money into it as soon as it's yours anyway.

Thanks SPARKS89,
I haven't driven it yet, but I do know the light keeps coming back on after disconnect.
As far as I understand, the timing was adjusted to overcome the "retarding" and thus overcome powerloss....I'm doubtful that would actually work though.....

My rule of thumb is if it seems too good to be true, then it really is too good to be true. The guy is probably fed up with all the repairs and is cutting his losses. I don't think this would be a good buy unless you've got a good amount of money and time you're willing to spend on the truck.
