Hello all
i have a 91 4runner with the 22re and a 5speed. for the last about 10k it burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. i have pulled the plugs the front 2 look good the back 2 are garbage i have put the old plugs back in for now i had ngk platinum in there with about 40k on them. i know the motor is running really rich i need a new o2 just haven't gotten one. now the PO told me this is a jasper rebuild that would have about 60-80k on it since it was installed. Now i know it has burnt oil as long as i have had it but it was never even a quart every 3k. i don't know what to do first every one i have talked to say jasper motors can't be rebuilt i don't have the money for a replacement block. mayby HG ???? just looking for ideas

Mine burns a quart of oil about every 500 miles. Be happy your oil light doesn't come on when you turn right. I'm so sick of checking my oil...

 

Oil light??

 

Yeah...little red light that has an oil thing and drips oil (thats what it looks like!) and when I'm low on oil and I turn sharp it comes on. Its when I turn left sharp because the thing that reads how much oil is in the pan is on the right side of the engine. lol

 

The only thing I suggest is doing a leak down test...to confirm where the oil is coming from. have you done a compression test?

 

not yet i have to buy a tester

 

o i just thought about it i bet i don't have a oil light since i have the sr5 gauges i have a gauge

 

and check your pcv valve while you're in there

 

how will a compression tester tell me where my issue is

 

If you have low compression in a cylinder it could be burning oil. A valve may not be seated...but ultimately a leak down tester will tell you whats wrong.

 

So what are your guys thoughts on "engine restore". I have heard great reviews, since im burnin about 1.5 quarts of amsoil per oil change (5000km)I thought I might give it a try.

 

i haven't heard any thing i was going to try some lucus this oil change and see if it did anything

 

I was going to try it when I changed my oil this sunday. Couldnt hurt. Some people say it clogges up the front bearings, but heck...I'm going to redo the piston rings and replace all that in a year anyway.

 

If you're burning that much oil, likely either your valve seals or rings or both are shot. Do a leakdown and get a better idea of what you need to replace.

"engine restore" or the likes, are at best a temporary fix.

Can't see why a "jasper" engine be rebuilt? Do they overbore them to death?

 

i was told jasper's are overbored as much as posible to make rebuilding faster

 

Mine has 5k miles on th rebuild and burns oil like a biatch

 

might this be a head gasket issue

 

I was adding a half quart every week until i rebuilt the top end. Now i add a quarter quart ever few weeks. So my main problem was the valve seals

 

what did that end up costing you

 

Parts were around $1100. I installed myself so i saved a ton on labor
