Broken Valve Spring

Anybody ever break a valve spring? I have a rebuilt motor with @5000 miles on it. The head is a super stock head from Engine Builder. The Runner was driving great and then last weekend while driving around town it just started running like crap along with a loud ticking noise. I popped the valve cover off and at a glance thought the valve spring was bent. I called engine builder and they said send it back and they would take care of it. Once I pulled the head I saw that the spring had snapped. After a Google search the only reason I found for such a thing was over revving. I rarely take this motor over 4 grand and when it happened I was driving casual around town. Just curious if anyone has had this happen to them?

Sometimes stuff just happens, might have had a stress riser, or maybe cracked or defective from new. Failure probably not due to anything you did.
Seems like the springs most likely to break are new ones.
There is a bell curve that describes mechanical failure, some few parts will fail right away, some few will not be able to be tested long enough to fail, and most failures will occur somewhere in the middle.

So I got word back from Engine Builders. The springs used were in a miss labeled box and looked similar enough to not be noticed by the eye alone. Given that these guys are truely awesome, they not only replaced the springs. They replaced the head and sent me the complete gasket set. I'm waiting for today's weather to pass before putting everything back together but I am very excited. I've had an idle issue since doing the rebuild back in November. I've checked and or replaced everything that could cause it. This could have been my problem all along. Moral of the story - ˟˟˟˟ happens. Let's hope were purring like kittens tomorrow.
