Brake line(s) to rear on 89
Been a few years since I did any posting here. Last I was here was to gain some advice on how to shut the fuel pump and injectors off with a switch so when I run the truck on woodgas I'm not feeding dino fuel too.
I did some searches, and have not quite found what I'm looking for so a post is in order.
A couple weeks back i went to move my truck after sitting for the winter, and I had a brake line burst going to the rear. I pulled it back into it's parking space, and thought a project for another day. So yesterday i went to start the truck up to pull it into the shop to look at the brake line issue, and the truck wouldn't start. I knew the gas was low, but not empty. Messed around with it for a while checking fuses and stuff and all that checked out. Truck would start and run on a little ether sprayed into a capped off vac port so thinking fuel pump. Anyway pushed the truck into shop and dropped the tank. Got the fuel pump out, and wired it up to test battery, and nothing. So now that tank is out check out the brake lines. Learning some stuff about that as I never really worked on brakes on these before. I have two lines coming to the back, and I think what the heck are there two lines for. Then I notice they are both just going to a "T" then a single line out ???? So as I research looking if any one makes a brake line set from front to back I start learning of the LSVP, and realize this "T" setup is already someones way of bypassing the proportioning valve. Found a really good article on doing that cleaner than the last person did
But still needing to replace that brake line, I am wondering if anyone knows if a one piece pre-bent line can be bought to go from the front "L" in the pass front wheel well to the back? I hate screwing around trying to make double flares on brake lines although I have done it before, and have the tools. I probably could buy a better tooling set, and maybe wouldn't dislike it as much
So looking for thoughts there.
Also if you want to give input on fuel pumps I'd appreciate that also. I have just been scoping out the Denso brand. Seems like a middle of the road replacement one. Looking on Parts Geek or e-bay I am finding super cheapys, and some more expensive.
I also have to deal with frame rust up behind the tank. I knew I had some on the drivers side inside surface about a 50cent piece size hole right around where the spring shackle attaches. Some on passengers side in same spot. Now's the time to do it. Passengers side is worse. To make a real proper repair and get out into the best metal the shackle should get cut off the frame, repair made and shackle welded back on. Been finding some good info on frame repair when I search. Wish someone out there made a prefab piece though with the frame contour for that location. I could easily make a straight piece in the press brake, but a stamped steel one in the correct shape would be nice. Glad I have never drove the truck in the winter here in WI, it would be in a lot worse condition. Body and rest of frame is really nice for the age. Just that spot just above that 1/4in drain hole that plugs up......
All this as I'm thinking of selling the thing.
